Worldliness

1. Avoid Contamination

If a cube of lead is placed on a cube of gold, the two metals slowly but inevitably begin to penetrate each other. In the same manner we tend to imbibe the spirit, to share the opinions, to partake of the qualities of our intimate associates. Though we may believe that our gold will enrich their lead, the opposite is far more likely to prove true-their lead will debase our gold. That is why the Psalmist said, “Depart from me, ye evil doers, that I may keep the commandments of my God” (Ps 119:115).

2. Church Tramps

A young man left the church of his parents for another church. Someone asked, “What was the matter with the church you left?” “Nothing,” he answered, “except they do a lot more for a fellow at the church where I’m going. They give you a splendid present at Christmas, a social with refreshments once a month, and a chance to get in with folk who can help you socially.” That was his idea of the mission of the Church. It was not long, however, before he changed churches again. The same man asked him why. “Oh, they did not reelect me president of the social league of the church, and I won’t stand for being slighted.” That is what Paul would call a carnal Christian.

3. Following Dual Paths

Kapitango Kusita, an evangelist overseer of an African Church, was talking about following the “white” path, and the “white” path only. It was night, and a crowd of natives sat around the campfire. A native dog passed between the fire and the listeners. “Look at that dog! How many legs has it?” asked the preacher. “Four,” came the reply. “Yes, four indeed,” retorted Kapitango, “but have you ever seen the four legs of a dog trying to follow more than one path at a time? No, no! The four all go together; yet people with only two legs try to follow two paths: Christ and the world, God and mammon.”

4. The White Dress

A group of young people were about to explore a coal mine. One of the girls was wearing a white dress. A friend urged her to go home and change. Not liking the interference, she turned to the guide who was to conduct them and asked, “Can’t I wear a white dress to go into the mine?” “Yes, ma’am,” was his reply. “There’s nothing to keep you from wearing a white dress down into the mine, but there’ll be plenty to keep you from wearing one back.”
